Summer Youth Program

Since 1998, the OAKS Summer Program at the Greenburg Oaks Apartments has served at-risk youth in 1st through 9th grades. In 2011, the OAKS Summer Program at Spencer House Apartments was extended to our Beaverton resident youth. OAKS stands for Open-minded, Active, Kind and Smart: attributes we hope to instill in every child.

The OAKS Summer Program offers children residing at CPAH properties the opportunity to participate in educational and recreational activities at no cost to families. High quality programming has been shown to improve school readiness and school performance. The OAKS program aims to do just that, operating four hours a day, four days a week.

Over the course of 5 weeks, youth take part in a variety of enrichment activities such as cooking, crafts, gardening, sports, games, and environmental education. Thanks to our partnership with the Beaverton and Tigard School Districts, the kids also receive breakfast and lunch free of charge.

In addition to the many on-site activities, participants in the OAKS Summer Program are able to take part in weekly field trips. The outings generally coordinate with the week’s theme and have included trips to the Oregon Coast, OMSI, Blue Lake, the Oregon Zoo, A.C. Gilbert House, The Broadway Rose Theatre and Portland Children’s Museum.

One goal of the OAKS Summer Program is to expose children to cultural, scientific and educational opportunities they may otherwise miss, while encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle. For the past several years we have partnered with YMCA Camp Collins to send 25 of our kids to sleep-away camp for one week.

The final week of program focuses on the return to school. With generous donations and assistance from Tigard United Methodist Church, Tigard Breakfast Rotary and Income Property Management, we have been able to provide more than 150 backpacks filled with school supplies to resident children for the past eight years.

The OAKS Summer Program is always looking for volunteers and donations. To get involved, email Lisa Lesko or call 503.293.4038.
