The After School Program, held at the Greenburg Oaks, Oleson Woods and Spencer House Apartments, is a welcoming place for children to participate in homework mentoring and enrichment activities such as crafts, games, computers and gardening. Every child that arrives before snack time is required to do homework or 20 minutes of reading either with a tutor or in small groups.
Open to children in Kindergarten through 8th grades, the After School Program serves 25 resident youth, three days a week from 3-5 pm. No-school days and holidays are “Fun Days,” and involve more in-depth crafts and activities, on-site guest presenters or local field trips. Participants at the program also take part in monthly field trips to Blazer games, The Portland Ballet, Oregon Children’s Theater, OMSI, Oaks Park and more.
In addition to tutoring and enrichment activities, staff at the After School Program have implemented the “Character Counts” curriculum; a national character education program that teaches monthly character skills such as “Responsibility” and “Fairness.” Youth earn points by practicing these skills and staff coordinate activities that tie-in with the month’s theme.
CPAH is lucky to have student volunteers from Tigard High, Beaverton High, Southridge High, Lake Oswego High, PSU, PCC Lewis and Clark and George Fox, as well as other community volunteers.
Volunteers work one-on-one with the kids to give them that extra help they might not have at home. It is a great experience for both the youth and volunteers. To get involved, email Lisa Lesko or call 503.293.4038.
